Serena Williams on the February 2019 Cover of Allure Magazine

For their February 2019 cover, Allure magazine chose Serena Williams. On the cover which was shot by Tanya & Zhenya Posternak, Serena is wearing JACQUEMUS. In the issue she talks standing up for herself, her daughter and more. Continue below to read some excerpts from her interview. For more on her feature, visit and pick up a copy on newsstand.

On loving the way she looks:
Venus and I started out being successful, continued to be successful, and we were also unapologetically ourselves. We were not afraid to wear braids. We weren’t afraid to be black in tennis. And that was different.

On loving herself in a world that is hostile to black girls/women:
I think my mom instilled in us to be confident women, to really believe in ourselves, be proud of our heritage, our hair, and our bodies. That was something that was really important for her to teach us. I’m definitely teaching it to my daughter.

On the similarities between her & her daughter:
I have a picture from when I was, like, two years old. My arms are ripped. If you look at my daughter, she has a very similar body type.

On her new collection 'Serena Great':
They’re not ‘extended sizes,’ because I feel like those sizes don’t fit the same. I was thinking, How do people describe me? They say I’m great. I don’t look like everyone else. They still call me great. In fact, they call me the greatest. I thought, OK, that’s it. That’s the word. It’s ‘great.
